The Fulltime RV Buzz Seems to Be Gone

That major RV obsession I had from October - December seems to have left! Not sure why.

There have been a few changes I guess that could have help in making the change. My job became much busier after they implemented the new operating system, that took over 3 months of "downtime" to complete the conversion of different systems into one. So now instead of bored out of my mind where I spent practically all day looking at RV's and reading blogs, is now busy enough where I don't have the time to even get online during work.

This winter has been warmer than I can ever remember. It's been great weather until today (rainy) for the Super Bowl week in Indy. So maybe the lack of a reason to escape the freezing temps made the RV urge to decrease.

As far as the house, I started having doubts about selling everything and hitting the road. So I pulled up the for sale sign, to be used possibly in the future but not right now. Instead of thinking of my list of things to do before leaving, that list changed to things I wanted to do to improve or add things I would like if I were to continue living here.  Plus I have been paying extra on my mortgage payment, so that payoff date looks to be about 7-8 months away.

So with my contentment, my mind was not running all over the place at breakneck speed.

I continue to read the blogs I follow every day. Those give me so much information to think about. I continue thinking about driving down the road in an RV and never coming back the majority of mornings that I make my 12 mile commute through the country to work. I still wonder if I will be as bored at home retired as I am at times during long weekends where my job is closed for a government holiday.

I do look at RVs from time to time but nothing like I did a few months back. During that time I would look at RVs for sale and read different forums or blogs until 2-3am every night.

So ...  I've been thinking that I might be leaning towards my original plan even before the RV bug hit me big time in October 2011.  Keeping my home as a "base camp", travel when I want for as long as I want and then come back if I need a break. The house would be sitting here free of charge.

I guess I will know the answers on what to do when the time comes.

Thanks for reading and following my blog, I will try to post more this month than I did in January.

  1. Sounds like a trailer attached to your SUV may be the way to take some trips. Sometimes its good to have a "base camp" if you have someone you can trust to watch it for you when you travel.

    1. I have kind of been thinking about a Casita to use with my V8 4Runner. I found a blog that was using that same combination. Looks like that would be doable. My only question is with my bloodhound and 2 bassets. (room) Of course most of their time is spent sleeping together in various spots of the house. They would adapt. I would also have a 4x4 to explore away from the campsite when needed.

  2. Looks like you're in a good place right now. Maybe a good plan would be to pay off the house, retire, and see what happens. I don't think retirement is anything like a long weekend or vacation time when boredom sometimes sets in. After you retire, you get into your own rhythm. You can stay up late, sleep in later in the morning, enjoy working in the garden doing things you didn't have time for when you worked. I haven't been bored at all since I left my job, and even though I'm a full-timer, I don't do much that I wouldn't be doing in my condo. I'm just walking Katie in different locations, and looking at different views from my windows.

You'll figure it out, take your time and decide when you're sure. (I always "decided not to decide" when I didn't know what to do. That took the pressure off me.)

    1. Good suggestions. That is usually when the solutions show up for me, when I let go of what I'm thinking about, then it becomes very clear. I don't see myself working past 62 and am really looking forward to having my own schedule again. I was self-employed selling online between 2005-2008 and really loved having my own schedule.

Like now its 12:16am local time, I am a night person so I am wide awake, yet will get up at 7am to get to work. I have a flexible time to start work so that is not too bad, but still I'd like the whole day tomorrow to myself.

I love those views you take pictures of.

  4. I think you are on the right track right now. No need to rush into things. Not everyone is a fulltimer, they keep their home base, yet are able to travel for months at a time. It can actually be the best of both worlds. Relax & breathe. Enjoy those sports right now! This way, when the weather gets better & you head into vacation time, perhaps you can rent an RV or still buy one & use it for vacations & weekends.
I've enjoyed reading your blog - please do keep it up!

  5. You are doing the right thing for your situation! Enjoy what you have, and make the most of it. You are in a great position, that will allow you to have flexibility. Don't rush into big change! Get comfortable with yourself where you are, and live your life each day, with joy for the many blessings you have!

    1. Flexibility is a good think Russ. I am glad that I have that option. I had an old friend tell me the other day when I discussed my situation and urge to "pack up and leave" .... "only move if that is a better situation for you".

Like I was telling TexCyn, I think after my RV weekend at the local state park 25 miles away and around 200 miles round trip of driving to rent the RV, that I will have a much better idea about my future plans.

  6. You have to do what you feel is right! And as long as you're safe and happy, more power to ya!! Sounds like you just had a 90 day "RV bug".....lolol.....

  7. Thanks TexCyn.

When the weather gets better I plan to rent a 26' Class C that is 70 miles north of me, then turn around and go to the state park on a lake that is 25 miles south of me. That will give me a "taste" of Rving with dogs, and get around 200 miles of test driving. I really think after that first trip I will have a real good idea where to go. I will probably be sometime in April that I make that first trip.

  9. Don't get me wrong, the bug to travel has not left. As I stated, the majority of mornings I am driving to work I think my whole 17 minute commute of driving down the highway to a new destination. The only thing different is I am not spending every waking minute looking at RVs to buy and reading blogs.

Safe and happy is a good thing, I agree.
