27° Felt Like Summer To Them

When I left you on Sunday, we had some snow on the ground after our rains. It snowed more after midnight Tuesday and this week has been very cold. Like single digits overnight and through mid mornings. I spent my time watching 8 seasons of Dexter while only staying up late one time. I finished that show yesterday a little after 5:30pm. Today was different ... bright sunshine, 7° when we got up but heading towards 30° it felt like it was time to spend outside.

Being cooped up for too many days so far in 2025 ... the hounds and dogs had a little bit of cabin fever to burn off. Especially the working dog of the group ... Ava. I mentioned a few posts ago that even in single digits I will let them come back to the door when they want to come in. They don't come when I call them, when I think it is time for them to come in ... so I let them decide. She always runs laps at least twice per day when she gets outside, no matter how cold it is.

When I look at the 10 day forecast it looks like we will be returning to normal winter averages, which I can live with. A few days will reach the high 50s and one or two might click the 60° mark. That gets us into March where I am hoping that Spring will be right around the corner.

This is at the back of the house, facing West. By the way the snow looked on the roof, it showed my insulation was good in this house and I was not losing heat through the roof. My only problem is, I don't like curtains, never have ... so I lose a lot of heat with three large windows uncovered in the living room and a patio door that could never handle curtains being opened a hundred times a day for the hounds and dogs.

I always shovel snow off the patio deck as soon as possible so the sun can melt what little is left, even when the temps are not above 32°. That helps cutting down the amount of snow tracked into the house. Henry likes to spend time out on the deck in the sun ... he must think that is warmer than I keep my house inside.

He is becoming my last Mexican momento from Arizona through all the weather differences here in "the tropics". The two big Mexican pots I brought with me, have fallen apart literally, due to the extreme cold. I just lost the last one a couple of weeks ago. He is well built though, so he should have any problems.

The Mexican tiles on top of this small table are breaking off as time passes. The frame and legs are made of steel. I plan on sanding them down this summer and treating them with some anti-rust treatment.

This is a pop up drain that is connected to the septic tank system but not a direct line to the pump itself. That drain is completely covered in snow ... I am not sure why this one had enough water to keep the drain clear of snow and the other didn't.

Question of the day is ... will a new sump pump help with the flooding in the backyard?

Henry was in the attack mode of playing at the start. He is pretty strong and can get Ava to the ground but cannot keep up with her when she runs away.

No plans for tonight I guess. I have looked through a lot of the free movies offered on the free streaming channels I have and nothing interests me. I am thinking of starting another binge watch ... Breaking Bad. Or maybe a movie from my DVD shelf.

This would be funny if it wasn't true. ... the only difference is I sleep on the right side edge of the bed and Henry sleeps vertical but in the middle ... it is hard to shove 90 pounds of dead weight for more sleeping space. Plus he is stubborn like all basset hounds are.

That is about it from "the tropics" of Southern Indiana.

  2. Nice blog and love the photos of the crew. You have really had the snow this season, and we have had maybe four inches total and about five inches of rain. A very dry winter here. Take care.

    1. It got up to 60° yesterday and by this afternoon snow/ice is predicted today the 5th. Your winter is quite a difference from that snow you had a couple of years ago.
