Fall Leads To Concussion

This post will be fairly short but at least will explain where I have been. A week ago on Tuesday morning around 4:30am, half asleep, walking Watson to the yard so he could pee. He woke me up to go out. I did not know that he had tipped over the water bowl that sent water across the slick tile floor. I slipped and fell on the wet tile floor in the kitchen, hit the back of my head. Today is the first day I have made it through the day without taking medication or laying in bed or on a recliner.

It is not my first concussion but hopefully my last. I could not remember the others being this bad. The real effect didn't hit me until Thursday night about 10pm with severe pain in my head that did not stop until Saturday around 3pm. I did get it check out for any fractures but I have a hard head I guess and was sent home. I drove around town today to do some errands and did not take any kind of medication.

The hounds and the dog knew something was wrong but once the day starts all three are in normal activity although they slept when I slept this past week. Walter was in charge and he is actually the one dog I heard barking when I came conscious.

I did not know what had happened. Didn't know where I was. Once I figured out it was not a dream by the pain in my head, I could see I was in a house. I did not know what town or state that house was located in or even who's house it was. I looked at a piece of mail when the dogs came back inside, to see what the address was. I immediately went back to bed, which I am told I should not have done, and tried to sleep when I could.

At least the temps are dropping about 10° this week so it will be great weather here in "the tropics" of Southern Indiana.

  1. Omgosh, praying you heal and have no lingering effects. Watson sure looks like he might be the size of a standard dog. He has sure gotten BIG.

    1. I am feeling better each day. I still have a little stiffness in my neck but am able to get through the days up and alive without taking any meds. Watson is going to be huge, much bigger than Sadie or Stella.

  2. Wow Steve. Do you have caretakers for the pups selected in case something happens in the future?

    1. Yes, I have someone to take care of the pups if something bad happens. In my will I have direct instructions who they go to. In my iPhone SOS I have a list of friends listed so they know if I am ever taken to a hospital. Before my fall I drove by your "racetrack" on Hwy 41 on my way to Vincennes.

  3. So sorry to hear of your fall and so good that you had it checked out. Yes, need to stay awake after a fall like this. I slipped on black ice over 20 years ago and split my head open. My husband (retired MD) was able to get the bleeding stopped and then we stayed up all night as he did not want me to sleep. Falls are so easy to happen and especially when you least expect it. Please take care and if pain doesn't subside get checked out again. Prayers are with you.

    1. Well I have also slipped on black ice like you. I was on my way to work, suit and tie, and remember seeing my shoes higher than my head. I drove to work feeling terrible and passed out once I got there. They took me to the doctor then. That was one of my concussions that had lasting effects for a long time later. I am feeling better every day and and I have that pain I will definitely go back to the doctor. Thank you.

    1. Thank you. Yep, not fun. Then I remember how football players in the pros and college go through this in worse situations all the time and return to play the game weeks later. I am just happy I had only pain and not nauseous or being sick.

  6. Glad to hear you are doing o.k. Was worried when you hadn't posted for awhile. At our age, we can't be falling down whenever we feel like it. LOL Take care.

    1. Well you can bet that every time I walk into the kitchen I look at the floor first. I no longer leave water out at night for the hounds if they get thirsty after we go to bed. My old friends remind me that a cat only has 9 lives and have exceeded that number. LOL

  7. Steve- very glad you survived ,but you could easily have been in very different situation as you live alone (+ dogs)I think you are an Apple fan & hopefully wear an Apple Watch- really hope you set up the 911 feature, perhaps put in your friend’s phone number too who lives near you .Best nothing ever again occurs & all the best.

    1. Yes, that is the scary part at my age. No matter how young I think I feel, bones don't lie about age. I would hate to thing about the worse case situations leaving the dogs in a bad situation. Yes I have wore an Apple Watch since the Series 4 and then bought a second Series 5 after my bike wreck in Sept 2019. I get data while I ride on those watches in combination with the Strava App. I have not only my friends phone number in there I have a list of friends numbers in my iPhone Health SOS so they will get a notification when I am taken to a medical facility and where that facility is. Living single with dogs I always have had a back up plan and a way to notify people. Yes I am glad I survived with only what I went through, other alternative possibilities would not have been good. Thanks for your concern.

  8. Feeling better each day. Yes, it was quite a hit. Worse than I can remember of incidents in the past. Thank you and I expect to feel better each day but it will be a while before I decide to do much out of the normal daily routine of relaxing.

  9. Dude! I thought fall was supposed to lead to cooler weather, not double-vission.
